Just about all TV shows now use subtitles. Not sure why this is, but perhaps it’s so that people can dip into them better, or keep the sound down, etc. It makes the viewport very small though. This is a relatively uncluttered example. Incidentally, note the furigana here. A writing system so complex it needs another one to explain it!
